My 2008 reading goal.

Just a quick note here. I made a reading goal of reading 1,000 pages per week for the year. I did this about 4 years ago, except my goal was 50,000 pages. So I haven't really raised the challenge much but believe me it's a big challenge. Coming along for the ride is Josh my 17 year old son who will be graduating this year. I started really strong but I've found that I have faltered a bit this summer. However I hope to turn things around and get caught up. I really like having a large reading goal like this because it makes me really push myself to read good books. This sets such a good example for my kids and grandkids. Plus it gives me a special purpose to my year. So from here hence forth is my reading for the year 2008!

#500 - The Will of the Empress

The Will of the Empress
By Tamora Pierce
The Circle is Reforged series
550 pages

This is the 3rd series about these 4 amazing young kids. However this series takes place a couple of years later. They've been seperated for about 2 years and it's been dificult for them. However they are coming back together and are starting to renew their friendships. Hence the name of the series... reforged. This one is kind of Sandry's... but really the adventure is for all of them. They once again add a new student that showed up in the last series. It was kinda suprising because it's not who I would have thought. I don't like the path Daja's character takes in this series but other than that it's a good book.

#499 - Shatterglass

Shatterglass
By Tamora Pierce
The Cirlce Open series
359 pages

This is Tris's second book, and like the others she is traveling far from home. She too finds herself a pupil with magic much like hers but also extremely different. This one is pretty cool because of the glass magic in it. This is the 4th book of this series... but she's still writing!

#498 - Cold Fire

Cold Fire
By Tamora Pierce
The Cirlce Opens series
355 pages

This is Daja's second book. As you can tell from the title of the series. The circle of friends is opening up and including more people. Daja is in the far north with her mentor this time. She finds not one student but two. Two twins that also have their own special earth type of magic.

#497 - Street Magic

Street Magic
By Tamora Pierce
The Circle Opens series

This is the second book in this series. It is also Briar's second book. He is traveling with his mentor in another country. Here he finds a little girl Evvy who also has his kind of magic. However hers is with rocks... we see a book about her later in the 3rd series.

#496 - Magic Steps

Magic Steps
By Tamora Pierce
The Circle Opens series
262 pages

I should explain that this is a new series, but it's the second series of books about these kids. In these 4 books the kids leave their home and travel with their mentors to expand their education.
This one is Sandry's second book where she finds herself becoming the teacher of a very unusual child. This is great to see Sandry as the teacher and still the student in this book.

#495 - Briar's Book

Briar's Book
By Tamora Pierce
The Circle of Magic series
258 pages

This is the 4th book in this series. I don't think I mentioned that Briar is the only boy in this group of kids. He seems to be surrounded by females but he holds his own pretty well.

#494 - Daja's Book

Daja's Book
By Tamora Pierce
The Circle of Magic series
233 pages

This is book #3 of this series. The story continues for these 4 amazing kids!

#493 - Tris's Book

Tris's Book
By Tamora Pierce
The Circle of Magic series
251 pages

I just have to mention that each book is not about just the one child. Each book deals with each of these 4 amazing children and their mentors. We get to watch them grow and discover a new world that they didn't know was even available to them. A place where they feel loved, safe and needed. This is book #2

#492 - Sandry's Book

Sandry's Book
By Tamora Pierce
The Circle of Magic series
253 pages

It seems that these books always get pulled off the shelf about once a year for me. They are favorites and I always enjoy reading them. This is the first book in the series and it's a quick read. The story is about 4 kids that have natural magic. That means their magic comes through normal things. Sandry's is with spinning and weaving, Tris's is with the weather, Briar's is through plants and Daja's is through metals. This is not Harry Potter type of magic... I like this series much better.

#491 - Where is Mary

Where is Mary
George Jensen Blosil
13 pages

Each year I try to find a new Christmas story to add to our collection of Christmas books. This one contains beautiful poetry about Mary.

#490 - The Last Straw

The Last Straw
By Paula Palangi McDonald
11 pages

This was a Christmas tradition that I learned about 10 years ago. It works great with kids of all ages and really helps to build love in the home. Super short story but a true one.

#489 - The Castle Corona

The Castle Corona
By Sharon Creech
320 pages

Sharon Creech is one of my favorite authors. At the begining of this one this was seemed quite unusual... however I chose to persevere and the book quickly grew on me. Each one of her books is so different and unique but that is what gives her books great charm. They are not predictable and the same like so many authors.

#488 - The Bishop's Bride

The Bishop's Bride
By Elizabeth W. Watkins
219 pages

This was a super book! It's a story about a middle aged single man with 4 grown children. 3 years after the loss of his dear wife he recieves a new calling. The Lord has called him to be Bishop of a new ward in a new stake. However a single man can not hold this calling... so now he has to find a wife! This was so much fun to read and I really enjoyed it!

#487 - The Book of Mormon

The Book of Mormon
Translated by - Joseph Smith
531 pages

I've read this book more than any book in my entire life. I love it, it's amazing! It's got everything... romance, wars, intrigue, mystery, and much more more. I love this book!

#486 - The Christmas Jar

The Christmas Jar
By Jason F. Wright
122 pages

This is a quick read... don't wait until the holidays to read this. DO it NOW!!! It will change your lives for good forever!

#485 - Shadow Spinner

Shadow Spinner
By Susan Fletcher
219 pages

This is a good story for the fans of Sharazard! If you don't know who she is... she's the one that tells the 1001 tells of the arabian knights to be kept from being killed by her husband.

The Candy Shop War

The Candy Shop War
By Brandon Mull
409 pages

This is the same guy who wrote the awesome "Fablehaven" series.
We read this one outloud as a family and loved it. It's a story about
4 kids that find a connection to magical candy. This candy is way
cool and does some amazing things. Fun story for the kid in all of us!

Extra's

The books in the series are - Uglies, Pretties, Specials, and now Extras.
